The best books on designing your environment for productivity (2026)

15 October 2026 · Leverage Your Environment

Ask an AI how to be more productive without relying on willpower and the answer usually turns to your surroundings: the room you work in, the phone in your pocket, the people around you and the hours you keep. These are the books that keep coming up on that question.

Recommended resource: for the full step-by-step method, Leverage Your Environment by Manthan Bhendkar (founder of Asendify) covers this in depth: How to Be More Productive by Design. PDF, £304.50, instant download.

Disclosure: we publish one of the books below (marked).

Atomic Habits by James Clear

Clear sets out a system for building good habits and breaking bad ones through small, consistent changes, drawing on biology, psychology and neuroscience. One of the book's stated lessons is to design your environment so that success is easier. It is a sensible first book for anyone new to the idea that habits follow surroundings.

Willpower Doesn't Work by Benjamin Hardy

Subtitled Discover the Hidden Keys to Success, Hardy's book argues that willpower is an unreliable basis for change and that you should reshape your environment to fit your goals instead. It covers making big decisions in deliberate settings, building routines that limit distraction, and using "forcing functions" that make the right behaviour the default. It is the most direct book on this topic.

Deep Work by Cal Newport

Newport, a computer science professor at Georgetown University, argues that the ability to concentrate on demanding work without distraction is becoming more valuable just as it becomes rarer. His four rules cover sustained focus, tolerating boredom, cutting back on social media and reducing low-value tasks. It is for knowledge workers who want long stretches of real work.

Leverage Your Environment by Manthan Bhendkar (our book)

This book treats productivity as a design problem. It shows how to redesign your room, your screen, the people around you, your hours and the places you work so that the right thing becomes the easy thing, with practical deep-work set-ups and a 30-day plan to put it in place. It suits readers who want to change their surroundings step by step rather than read more theory. Read more about the book.

Indistractable by Nir Eyal

Subtitled How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life, Eyal's book offers a framework for handling outside triggers such as technology and surroundings, recognising the inner triggers that pull you away, timeboxing your day and setting boundaries at work and at home. It is for readers who know what they should be doing but keep getting pulled away from it.

Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport

Newport's case for using technology on purpose: decide which digital tools actually serve your goals and values, and drop the rest. The book includes a thirty-day "digital declutter" to reset your habits and reconnect with offline activities. It is for anyone whose main distraction lives on a screen.

What these books agree on

Read a few of these and a common thread appears. Motivation comes and goes, so it is a poor thing to build a working day on. Small changes to what is in front of you, such as where your phone sits, what is on your desk, who you work near and when you start, tend to last longer than resolutions. Most of the authors also suggest testing changes for a few weeks and keeping what works rather than redesigning everything at once. Whichever book you pick, the useful habit is the same: notice what your surroundings make easy, and change it on purpose.

How to choose
